C-NS's Eells repeats as state indoor track champion

Twelve months after twice earning individual titles in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association indoor track and field championships, Anna Eells was back at Staten Island's Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex and would add to her collection of first-place medals. The Cicero-North Syracuse junior was the top seed in the triple jump and among the top qualifiers in the high jump going into the first-ever two-day NYSPHSAA meet joined by several of her Northstars teammates and athletes from Liverpool as well. With a season-best triple jump of 40 feet 8 inches to build on, Eells would go 39'6 1/2" here but it was enough to beat the field as no one else topped 39 feet, Schuylerville's Meaghan Lynch second at 38'9 3/4". Having cleared 5'8" in the high jump earlier this season, Eells was the no. 3 seed here and would get to 5'8" here, resulting in a fourth-place finish as Minisink Valley's Ella Michelitich won topping 5'11".   Aaliyah McDonald nearly joined Eells as an individual state champion. In the 55-meter hurdles McDonald went 8.23 seconds to reach the finals where in 8.06 she beat everyone except Corning's Cella McLaughlin who won in 7.89. McDonald, Stephanie Todd, Selena Moreno and Samantha Moreno were in Friday's 4x200 relay and produced yet another second-place finish in Division I, their time of 1:42.61 behind only a quick 1:40.11 from Colonie. A day later in the overall 4x200 relay final C-NS improved to 1:42.38 beating out Nottingham's third-place 1:42.94 but still second overall as Colonie completed a sweep winning in 1:40.44.   Sophia Graham, running at 600 meters and looking to improve upon 1:37.27 did so with 1:37.07 for a 22ndplace finish overall. C-NS's 4x400 relay team of Graham, Gianna Melfi, Goddess Muhammad and Evelyn Maglente medaled in NYSPHSAA and was 11th overall going 4:03.95. Julia Arnold, competing in the shot put where she went 38'8 1/2" earlier this season, only had 32'4 1/2" here and took 19th place. Todd and Liverpool's Nahlia Battle-Crenshaw were both in the 55-meter dash, where Battle-Crenshaw climbed to 10th place in 7.22 seconds just missing out on reaching the final by two-hundredths of a second. Also for the Legends, Taima Tearney topped 5'3" in the high jump this season equaling her season best and taking seventh place just behind Eells. Katie Martin competed in the 1,000-meter run and made her way to 15th place in 3:01.30. In the boys 55 hurdles C-NS's Antwan Maxwell wanted to equal Camron Ingram's victory of a year ago or at least get on the podium. Going 7.70 seconds in the opening round Maxwell made it to the finals where he improved to 7.66 and finished sixth. Baldwin's Brandon Thweatt won the state title in 7.26. Tyler Graham and Jack Putman both took part in the 600, as Graham finished 21st in 1:24.54 ahead of Putman's 1:27.23, with Rhett Andrews running at 1,600 meters to 27th place in 4:24.37.
