Cicero-North Syracuse offense wakes up at right time in flag football win over rival Liverpool

There has always been an unspoken rivalry between Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool, two of the Syracuse area's largest high schools located less than 10 miles apart from one another.

The Northstars and Legends faced off three times last year in flag football, with each matchup being decided by just one score.

As C-NS coach Stephen Mirizio puts it, "It doesn't matter at what point in the season — whether it's our first game or the playoffs against them."

So when the Northstars started hot in Tuesday's rivalry bout, they made sure not to let up in a 24-13 victory over the Legends for their first win of the season.

"Our rivalry goes way back," Mirizio said. "It's always going to be a dogfight, and that's how it was today."

The dynamic offense that C-NS displayed through last year's run to the sectional championship game had been noticeably quiet through two out-of-section contests to open the season.

That changed drastically against Liverpool.

The Northstars came out on fire, jumping out to a quick 12-0 lead. C-NS quarterback Hailey Dupra orchestrated multiple scoring drives.

Liverpool was able to re-establish itself in the game thanks to an improved defensive effort and a pair of touchdowns.

Again, it was the Northstars' offense that stepped up. Dupra rallied C-NS in what was the junior's first action under center since her freshman season.

"Hailey is taking a big step this year," Mirizio said. "She's taking the burden pretty well. She's learning day in and day out. She's a fantastic leader on and off the field, and I couldn't be more happy and proud of her and everything she's putting on her shoulders."

Dupra connected with receiver Natalie LaPoint on two long touchdown passes. LaPoint received only limited action on offense last year, making her presence felt more on defense.

The Northstars also had Shanyrah Burton-Sledge and Kylie Stockton punch in scores.

C-NS (1-1-1) looks to stay unbeaten in sectional competition with a clash against Syracuse East on Thursday.

"It's all about just keeping our heads held high and staying level, not getting too cocky," Mirizio said. "(We can) use this as a stepping stone. Obviously, it's great to get this win. It's just about keeping this moment, moving it forward and not letting it get by us."

Liverpool (0-1) hosts Baldwinsville on Thursday in the Bees' season opener.
