Clutch defensive stops propel Cicero-North Syracuse flag football to season-opening win

Cicero-North Syracuse flag football is fielding a young squad that includes just seven seniors.   Despite only being acclimated with each other for a week, the Northstars connected well in Friday's season opener against Section II's Bethlehem.   Backed by a solid defensive effort, C-NS edged the Eagles by a 7-6 score on the road."It's huge for us because it immediately builds up momentum for us," C-NS coach Stephen Mirizio said. "We have high expectations, so going forward we're hoping (the win) pushes us."  The Northstars' lone touchdown came on the first drive of the game. Senior Amanda Timmons darted 18 yards into the end zone to make it 6-0 in favor of C-NS.   Senior quarterback Olivia Cook then connected with sophomore receiver Hailey Dupra for the extra point to bump the Northstars' advantage to 7-0.   "The girls did an awesome job. To come out like that and start a drive and end it well is incredible," Mirizio said.   Bethlehem notched its TD late in the second half. The Eagles cut it to a one-point deficit, but C-NS's defense thwarted their opponent's opportunity at an extra point.   From there, the Northstars executed key defensive stops to keep the Eagles in check.   "Our defense played amazing," Mirizio said. "They especially held their own in the final two minutes of the game."    C-NS (1-0) faces Syracuse East in its home opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m.    The Northstars lost to Syracuse East twice last season.    "It'll be exciting. It's always fun to go up against them," Mirizio said.
