Girl's Swimming and Diving

CNS Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving Downs Syracuse City- Drains Liverpool 103.5-82.5

It was a big week for the for the Girls Varsity Swimmers and Divers as they picked up two wins securing a 2nd place overall finish in the SCAC.  On Tuesday the Northstars defeated Syracuse 89-75, leaving the Stars with just one day to prepare for one of the winningest girls Swimming & Diving traditions in Section 3 history.   Liverpool, a road team this year, as a result of their pool being down, faced a seasoned bunch of Northstar Nomads, conditioned to the demands of 30 plus years without a home of its own.  In the 200-medley relay, the Stars sizzled out of the gate with a seasons best blistering pace, and 1st place finish of 1:57.36 to Liverpool's 1:57.54.  Kate Gucciardi, Brittany Wood, Alayna Harbaugh, and Bryn Myers led the charge, backed up by the 3rd place finish of Alexa Kulakowski, Cassidy Svoboda, Lillian Thorne and Kaitlyn Carroll in 2:07.95.  The 1-3 finish in the 1st event set the tone, as the Stars pounded away in the next event with Gucciardi picking up a 1st in the 200 freestyle in 2:07.93 followed by Grace Devinney in 3rd (2:12.65).  Erika Purdy swam to a lifetime best of 2:14.26 for a 1-3-4 finish and contributed to a growing lead.  Brittany Wood scored two crucial 2nd place finishes in the 200IM and 100 Breaststroke preventing Liverpool from catching up.   Senior Jeanne Vinnette and freshman Julia Kulakowsi provided great depth in the IM event as well.  In the 50 freestyle, Bryn Myers, and Alyana Harbaugh lit up the "Pool" with a 1-2 Knockout finish, with Alexa Kulakowski  beating out two of Liverpool's best sprinters as well.  This grew the lead to 16, with the Stars dominant divers up next.  Liverpool proved to be no match for this week's Channel 9 athlete of the week, Maddie Thorne, and Kaitlyn Carroll, as they smiled while devouring the diving points without so much as a splash or a ripple.  (Thorne 256.35, & Carroll 241.3).  A Liverpool surge in the 100 butterfly, saw a 1-2 finish by the Warriors, but alas, proved to be their last gasp, as sprinters Myers, and Harbaugh relentlessly attacked in the 100 freestyle with lifetime bests of 57.39, and 58.75.  Even diver Kaitlyn Carroll jumped in for 4 lengths swimming a 1:04.61 to Liverpools 1:04.80.  The race of the night proved to be the 500 freestyle, which turned into a 20 length battle seeing Devinney, Vinnette, and Ryleigh Lenning swimming 5:56.33, 5:56.34, & 6:10.57 to Liverpool's Brown(5:53.44) Petit 5:56.33, and Furr (6:09.54).  With the lead now 20, the Stars would not relent, as Myers, Gucciardi, Wood, and Harbaugh absolutely blasted the Warriors in the 200 free relay 1:45.07 to the "Pools" 1:47.27.  A. Kulakowski, C. Svoboda, Devinney, and Vinnette clocked a 1:52.24 to give the Northstars a crucial 1-3 finish, making it impossible for the Warriors to catch up in the next three events.  Kate Gucciardi swam to a 1st in the backstroke, and in the last event the Stars were able to take a 2-3 finish in the 400 free relay to drain the "Pool" 103.5-82.5.  With this win the Stars finish the regular dual meet season 8-2-1 and lock up a 2nd place overall finish in the league.
