CNS Girls Varsity Swimming and Diving defeats West Genesee, New Hartford

Last Friday the Lady Northstars routed West Genesee 99-76 in front of a packed house and teacher appreciation night at Le Moyne College.  The Stars won 10 of 12 events.  Sprinters Bryn Myers and Alayna Harbaugh went 1-2 in the sprint freestyle events.  Kate Gucciardi swam to a life time best in the 100 freestyle in 58.79 insuring a 1-2-3 sweep in the event.  Taking first place, Cassidy Svoboda set a winning best mark of 1:19.75 in the 100 breaststroke.  Great races by Alexa Kulakowski in the 100 backstroke, and Brittany Wood in the 200IM, and 100 butterfly pushed the Stars to a commanding lead.  Divers Kaitlyn Carroll and Madeline Thorne again demonstrated they are the best Divers in Section 3.  The Highlight of the night came from senior diver Madeline Thorne as she broke a 15-year school record held by Keri Vito, class of 2004.  Keri was a 3x State team qualifier, placed in the top 10 at States 3 years in a row, her senior year placing 3rd, and was a HS All American in 1-meter Diving, placing her among the top 100 Divers in the country.   Keri is currently Madeline's Diving coach.  Keri's record of 266 points was surpassed by Madeline with a score of 280.9 points earning her a 7th place overall State ranking in NYS.
 
Last night the team travelled to New Hartford High School to take on the Spartans.  The Stars came away with a big win downing the Spartans 95-88.  In a meet of close races, the Stars prevailed in races decided by tenths of a second!  In the first event, Gucciardi, Wood, Harbaugh and Myers scored 1st in 2:01.33 to the Spartans 2:02.02.  Eighth grader Kate Gucciardi beat Julia Ficano 2:08.43 to 2:08.85.  Brittany Wood picked up a crucial 2nd place in the 200IM with a seasons best time of 2:29.36.  Bryn Myers was a double winner in the 50 and 100 free.  Gucciardi picked up a second win in the 100 backstroke, The Stars sunk the Spartans for good with a big win in the 200 free relay with Myers, Harbaugh, Gucciardi, and Wood clocking a seasons best of 1:47.63 to New Hartfords 1:47.81.  With this win the Northstars improve to 6-2-1 and move to 2nd place overall in the SCAC.
