Boys Lacrosse Connie Pignatello

After 12 games, Cicero-North Syracuse boys lacrosse still hasn’t lost. They want to join Central New York’s elite.

For a man who has set countless records, Cicero-North Syracuse boys lacrosse coach Chuck Wilbur doesn't quite have a gauge on what might be one of his most impressive feats yet.  But he has a pretty good idea.  After a 14-9 win over Baldwinsville on Thursday night, the Northstars are 12-0. An unblemished mark this late in the season is unheard of for a C-NS program that has never won a sectional title.  "I don't keep track of that," Wilbur said when asked if this is the Northstars' best start ever. "Reality is I don't know, but it probably is because C-NS hasn't been very good for forever."Wilbur, a 1995 C-NS graduate, is most known for his time as the men's lacrosse coach at Onondaga Community College, where he transformed the Lazers into a dynasty. He ended his 17-year career at OCC with almost as many national championships (11) as total defeats (15) before stepping away from the field that's named after him to spend more time with his young family.  After three years as a volunteer assistant at C-NS, Wilbur took the head job at his alma mater in September 2021. The Northstars hadn't enjoyed a winning season in a half dozen years.  In the five seasons since Wilbur took charge, they've had four — and have already set a new high-water mark for wins in the Wilbur era with 12 this year.   With many of his friends' sons in the program – as well as his own son, Nicholas, a junior defender – Wilbur has steadily steered a young squad into one of the teams to beat in Central New York boys lacrosse.  "It's a work in progress," Wilbur said. "We're trying to make this program elite like the B'villes and F-Ms and Gennys."  Last year, C-NS went 1-5 against Baldwinsville, Fayetteville-Manlius and West Genesee, who hold a combined 54 Section III titles. This year, the Northstars are 3-0 against the Bees and Hornets — with a highly-anticipated matchup against the defending Class A champion Wildcats coming up on Tuesday.  "We're making our mark on the lacrosse world here in New York," senior defender Brady Collins said. "It's a big place for lacrosse and we're saying we're here, we're ready to play, we're not just a joke team anymore."  C-NS lost All-CNY Player of the Year finalist Joe Malecki to graduation, but returned 84% of its points from last season. Leading scorer and assister Donovan Chaney is back, alongside midfield stalwarts Adrian Sweeney and Quinn EmpeyJack Putman and Luke Deinhart have also enjoyed breakout campaigns and First-Team All-CNY goalie Noah Samphier has had another banner year.  "What's nice about young kids is they eventually get older," Wilbur said as he cracked a smile.     On Thursday, C-NS held a slight edge over Baldwinsville all game, taking the lead less than five minutes in and only stretching it to a game-high five-goal advantage with a minute left.  Both goalies had standout games, but C-NS held strong on the man-down and kept Baldwinsville from scoring more than two goals in a row at any point.  "I thought our rotation was phenomenal," Collins said. "The way we fired out to help each other and work back and help each other again."   The Bees cut the score to 9-8 when Zachary Bice capped off a hat trick at the three-minute mark of the third quarter, but Sweeney responded less than a minute later to stretch C-NS' lead back to two, and Baldwinsville only netted one more goal the rest of the way.  Sweeney, a junior midfielder committed to Syracuse, showed off fluid movement and good finishing to lead all players with five goals, all in the second half. Cooper Hunter scored his first career hat trick and Deinhart added two more goals.   Bice led Baldwinsville with three goals, followed by Nicholas IannoAmadeo DeVito and Parker Allen with two each.   It's been a trying season for Baldwinsville (4-9), which has now lost seven in a row, all against top-tier competition.  "It's been a crazy year of a lot of injuries combined with a difficult schedule," Bees head coach Matt Wilcox said. "But our guys come to practice, they work hard and they just keep fighting."   The Bees have advanced to six straight Class A sectional finals — and won a pair of state titles in 2022 and 2023 — but they may have to go on the road in the playoffs to reach a seventh straight championship game.  C-NS has not reached a championship game under Wilbur's watch. The Northstars fell to then-undefeated West Genesee in last year's semifinal round, their third defeat of the season to the Wildcats and ninth straight loss against them since 2021.  Leaving the field Thursday night, C-NS filed away in the same formation the Wildcats have for years.  "Two lines!" one Northstar assistant barked.   "Let's go! Nice and straight," another assistant added.   "Helmets on," Wilbur reminded them. "Keep the helmets on."
