C-NS's Welch seventh at state Division I wrestling meet

For the second year in a row Kaydin Welch would represent the Cicero-North Syracuse boys wrestling team in Albany during the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division I championships – and he would have company from a brother-sister tandem. As the top wrestlers gathered Friday at MVP Arena Welch joined them as the 215-pound Section III champion, an upgrade from the at-large berth he earned as a sophomore in 2025. What's more, Welch was the no. 6 seed with his 35-2 record, meaning that if those seeds held he could earn a podium finish, just the second in the last 20 years to go with Kennedy Thomas' eighth-place effort in 2024   Against Pittsford's Mohammed Hamenoo in his round-of-16 bout, Welch needed only 58 seconds to record a pin and advance to the quarterfinals, where he engaged with Yorktown's Rocco Lorre in a classic. They went back and forth in the first period, Welch leading 5-4 at one point but unable to hold it due to a Lorre two-point reversal. They exchanged points until the third period when a reversal and near-fall gave Lorre a cushion Welch was unable to overcome as he took a 13-10 loss. Welch on Saturday morning met Sayville's Javen Taff and pinned him in the closing seconds of the first period, clinching a podium finish. ? Phil Blackwell After a 12-7 defeat to Brentwood's Manaen Capellan, Welch had one more bout left and he would win it, claiming an 8-3 decision over William Floyd's Josiah Lors to finish seventh. Sophomore Grady Ellsworth, the sectional runner-up at 110 pounds, earned an at-large berth into the state tournament with his 25-7 record and would face Sayville's Carmine Catapano in the opening round and take a 16-1 defeat in a technical fall. Later in the consolation bracket, Ellsworth won when Valley Central's Andrew Uszenski was disqualified, only to take a 12-3 defeat to Connetquot's Ethan Hauser to complete a 26-9 season. Moving to girls wrestling C-NS's Shea Ellsworth was, like Grady, a second-place sectional finisher, but her 20-4 record at 100 pounds earned the junior an at-large bid to the girls NYSPHSAA championships held Thursday, also in Albany. As the no. 9 seed Ellsworth faced Brockport's Mackenzie Meisch in the first round, the winner to challenge another Section V wrestler, top seed Jasmine Burcato (Alexander), in the quarterfinals. Meisch ended up defeating Ellsworth with a fall at the 3:31 mark and later, in the consolation bracket Ellsworth again was kept off the board in a 12-0 defeat to Franklin D. Roosevelt-Hyde Park's Natalia Quinteros Tejada. Bruncato did go on to the state title beating General Brown's Zoey Jewett in the title bout. The sister tandem of Zoey and Pearl Jewett (who wrestled at 94 pounds) shared the best finish for any Section III girls wrestler
