The top wrestlers in Section III gathered at Onondaga Community College's SRC Arena on Saturday for the Division I and Division II inter-class boys wrestling championships.
Section III's three undefeated wrestlers, Central Square's Jaxon Perkins (43-0 at 131 pounds), West Genesee's Maxx Fesinger (37-0 at 170) and Syracuse's Ryan Brown (30-0 at 190) all stayed perfect.
No. 6 seed Kasey Kalfass (124 pounds) from Cicero-North Syracuse was the lowest seed to win a title and Jordan-Elbridge's Mason Tanner (108) also played spoiler, knocking off Section III's lone defending state champion, Holland Patent's Andrew Juliano. Kalfass (Division I) and Tanner (Division II) were awarded most outstanding wrestler of the tournament honors.
Kalfass rips through 124 bracket
When Kalfass wrestled against 124 top seed Dominic Shiano a month ago, the CBA sophomore pinned the C-NS freshman in just 34 seconds. Kalfass was too aggressive, and he paid for it.
"Right when I got pinned, I knew I just had to work in the room," Kalfass said. "Try to get better and better, so I could beat him."
In Saturday's 124 championship match, Kalfass got back on top with a 12-4 decision.
"I knew he was pretty good on neutral," Kalfass said. "So I had to get out of the first period not down by a lot, and then second period I just knew I could turn him. Third period I just had to wrestle."
That match completed a remarkable comeback for the freshman, who finished as the runner-up at 101 in last year's Division I championships but started this season at 124 just 2-8, and none of his losses were close. He's been attending sometimes as many as three separate wrestling practices per day in the weeks since, assistant coach Ryan Snow said.
To win the title at 124 on Saturday, sixth-seeded Kalfass not only beat top-seeded Shiano, but he also beat second-seeded Eli Faus of Indian River and third-seeded Peyton Spencer of East Syracuse Minoa.
"I was a little nervous," Kalfass said of what he thought when he saw the bracket ahead of Saturday. "But nerves are ok."
