Emilee Rio scored the game-winning goal in Cicero-North Syracuse's 1-0 overtime win against Whitesboro in a Saturday afternoon girls soccer contest.
In OT, Rio turned on a Whitesboro defender and struck a shot that tucked under the crossbar and went just over the goalkeeper's head. Rio's goal was unassisted.
C-NS coach Jeremy Lenchert said Rio, who's been on the Northstars' varsity squad since the seventh grade, finds ways to be consistent.
"She a dangerous player," Lenchert said. "Once she took the shot, you knew she had an opportunity (to score) there."
Rio's consistency is what makes her a "special player," Lenchert said.
"She's one of the best players to come through the program," Lenchert added.
In net for the Northstars, Natalie Lapointe and Meghan McGrath combined for 10 saves.
Megan Williams tallied nine saves in goal for Whitesboro.
A young core with five seniors on its roster, Lenchert said his C-NS squad stepped up.
"There's a lot of them who are playing varsity for the first time this season," he said. "It was definitely a battle today, but they held their own."
C-NS (2-1) is set for a rematch against West Genesee at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. This past Tuesday, the Northstars lost 2-1 to the Wildcats.
"It's all about being consistent. We came out pretty strong (last Tuesday), but we just couldn't finish," Lenchert said. "We hope to take a step forward (on Thursday)."
