Two Central New York runners competed on the national stage Saturday and in the process broke Section III records in their respective events.
Cicero-North Syracuse senior Kate Putman placed first in the mile, and Skaneateles senior Kyla Palmer placed fourth in the 600-meter run at the 115th Millrose Games in New York City.
"It's been around for 115 years," said Rob Tuttle, Skaneateles' indoor track coach and Section III chairperson. "It's elite. There are Olympians down there running right now. So it's probably the most prestigious indoor track meet in the United States."
Putnam, who will run for top-ranked NC State next fall, won the mile in 4:45.35, which bested her previous Section III record-setting performance of 4:45.90. She set that record on Jan. 21 at the U.S. Army Officials Hall of Fame Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.

Palmer, who is committed to run at Boston College next year, also set a Section III record in the 600 with her time of 1:34.39. That bested former Fayetteville-Manlius runner Heather Martin's time of 1:34.55, a record that had stood since 2011.
"(Kyla) is extremely focused, always kind of focused in on what she wants to do and what her goals are," Tuttle said. "She breaks things down, studies a lot and is well prepared going into a meet."
Both Putman and Palmer will next compete in the Section III state qualifier on Wednesday at Onondaga Community College's SRC Arena.
"Section III has always been competitive," Tuttle said. "It's a serious sport. Kids take it serious, and they train hard. I think the years and years that it has continued as a sport is really why it is where it is right now."
