Boy's Basketball James McClendon

Liverpool bench huge in dominant 2nd quarter vs. C-NS in boys basketball matchup

Liverpool boys basketball outscored Cicero-North Syracuse 25-14 in the second quarter of Tuesday's Salt City Athletic Conference matchup. The Warriors jumped out to a 36-24 lead at the half and never looked back en route to a 66-58 victory over the Northstars.  Junior Kaelem Haskins, junior Isaiah Issakainen and senior Luca Latocha provided a punch off the bench during Liverpool's second-quarter run. The trio only combined for four total points, but their energy and defensive effort was so important for the Warriors, their head coach Ryan Blackwell said.  "I think our bench was really good," he said. "Kaelem came off the bench with Isaiah and Luca and gave us some really big minutes off the bench in that second quarter. (They were) playing defense and rebounding and making some shots, and giving us a different look."   With the win, the Warriors are on a five-game streak with their only loss of the season coming against Section II's Schenectady in the Troy Invitational on Dec. 28.   "There's definitely room for improvement," Blackwell said. "I think we learned a lot about ourselves because that was a game against (Schenectady) when we were up 12 late. We squandered the lead, but we learned a lot about ourselves and how to manage the clock and not rush shots when we have a lead. I think we've gotten better at that, but there's still room for improvement on both ends of the floor."    Liverpool will look to use that experience when they host West Genesee at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The Wildcats are also undefeated in league play and only have one loss on their overall record. The Warriors edged West Genesee 53-50 in last year's Class AA sectional title game.   "They returned a lot of players," Blackwell said. "They are athletic and they get out and run. So defensively we're going to have to be at our best. We have the luxury of being able to go into Andreo Ash, because 1-on-1, There are not a lot of teams that can stop him. It's definitely gonna be a battle."  Ash finished Tuesday's game against C-NS with a team best 25 points. Junior Bruce Wingate had 18 points and senior Jah'Deuir Reese chipped in 12.   C-NS was led by sophomore guard Andrew Benedict, who finished with a game-high 27 points.   "Benedict is really talented," Blackwell said. "A lot of confidence. He's good with the ball. He's not afraid to take big shots. Defensively, besides Benedict, I think we get did a good job of shutting everybody else down for the most part."   The Northstars (7-3) will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Henninger.
