Junior guard Larry Nesci is one of many sharpshooters for Cicero-North Syracuse boys basketball this season.
Nesci has been on a hot streak from beyond the arc. On Dec. 3, the junior tied the school record for 3-point shots in a game with eight in a victory over New Hartford.
Fast forward to Saturday, Nesci was on fire once again. He broke the record by draining nine 3-pointers in the Northstars' 81-59 win over Section V's Wilson Magnet.
"When Larry tied the record two games ago, I figured it'd be a matter of time before he broke it," C-NS coach Kyle Martin said. "He puts a lot of work into being a great shooter and has deserved self-belief in his ability to make shots. We have a really selfless team that will feed the hot hand, which is a big part of this (record)."
Nesci, who finished with 27 points on the day, passed Northstars grads Nate Francis and Patrick Corbin to become the new record holder.
Corbin is an MLB pitcher and a 2019 World Series champion, while Francis is currently playing basketball at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
"We are always really happy for guys who achieve things because of hard work," Martin said. "And it's really cool company with Patrick Corbin and Nate Francis."
Martin noted that Nesci — along with Brennan Tyler, Ayden Stevens and Shepard Polos — is part of a group of exceptional shooters.
"They are such good shooters that it really forces teams to make a decision if they want to help on our good drivers or stay close to the shooters, which really helps out our overall offense," Martin said. "Larry had a good defensive game as well, which is something he has worked really hard at improving."
Tyler and Braylon Taylor each scored 14 points for C-NS, with Tyler knocking down a trio of 3-pointers. Miy'Jon McDowell Reid recorded six of his 11 points off free throws.
In Saturday's contest, the Northstars led 36-22 at the break and never looked back.
"I thought we played well," Martin said. "Wilson Magnet came in with three straight blowout wins because of its press, so that was obviously a focus this week in practice. We took care of the ball for the most part, got great shots and got a lot of stops in a high-possession game."
The Northstars (2-1) host undefeated Liverpool on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
"They are off to a great start and do a lot of things well," Martin said. "We will dive into their film this weekend and prepare on Monday."
