Led by a fresh-faced senior on one team and a more experienced senior on the other, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys and girls track and field teams both moved to 3-0 on Wednesday with victories over visiting Liverpool. The Northstars' boys squad defeated the Warriors 100-41, while the girls' group recorded an 83-56 decision.
For the boys, senior Jadin Tinker led the way with a pair of event wins. Tinker took first in the 400 run and 200 dash with times of 53.94 and 23.61 respectively.
C-NS coach Greg Broton noted that while Tinker had some experience on the track, his success this season has been a pleasant surprise.
On the girls' end, senior Brooke Blaisdell – who will be competing at Duke University next season – led the Northstars with a trio of wins. Blaisdell was victorious in the 100 dash (13.35), long jump (18-03) and triple jump (36-06)."(Jadin) did track as a sophomore but was pretty much on the JV squad. … He has really come on this year and has been really strong. He was a wonderful surprise. He's just got some natural ability," Broton said. "He was able to get in shape really quickly and has really been able to shine for us."
"(Brooke is) one of my senior leaders that we really rely on," Broton said.
Sophomore Hannah Boyle also picked up multiple event wins, taking the top spot in the 400 run (58.89) and 200 dash (27.35).
With last spring's cancelled high school sports season, Broton pointed to the difficulty of maintaining numbers in the C-NS track and field program but is hopeful for a return to normalcy soon.
"We've been able to bring in a couple of new faces, but they were (already) on the radar. Our modified teams are really tiny. We really rely on those modified teams. … For most of these athletes, they're not really exposed to track and field until seventh or eighth grade," he said. "We missed last year and a little bit of the winter season got pushed up. … We're hopeful that once we get through COVID, things will get back to normal and we'll get back to running."
