Riley Kennedy's article on Central New York dealing with postponement of high school sports

It is a beautiful time of year when trees change colors and the air becomes crisp, but this
fall is different with no Friday night lights and no homecoming.
This fall will not feature football, volleyball, and competitive cheer seasons, just yet.
These sports will be pushed back until March 1, 2021, because they were deemed
high-risk sports, the new season will be called "Fall Sports Season 2."
Section III low and moderate risk fall sports such as girls tennis, cross country, boys
soccer, girls soccer, field hockey, and boys golf are in the peaks of their seasons and off to a
great start. In New York it was up to each individual school if they would allow their teams to
play.
Cicero-North Syracuse High School, home of the Northstars, had elected to start their
low and moderate risk fall sports back on Sept. 21 and are currently in full swing.
Mike Lucia, head coach of the C-NS boys volleyball team, found the postponement of his
fall season as not a surprise. Lucia, who is member of the New York State Volleyball Coaches
Association and on the State Volleyball Committee was disappointed for the seniors as they
would not be taking the court during their "normal" season.
As for senior outside-hitter Kevin Felasco, he just wants to play and get back on the court
as soon as possible. "I thought it was the safest thing for the high school, and as long as we get to
play sometime down the road this year the team will be happy," Felasco said.
However, when the season rolls around this spring on March 1, 2021, things will be a
little different. Players and coaches will be required to wear a mask, and as of right now with the
sports being played only two spectators per athlete will be allowed to attend.  Wearing a mask has been the new norm as of April and players are still trying to adapt in
preparation of their seasons. "Yesterday was my first time playing with a mask on for basketball
and you'd be surprised it was pretty hard to breath," Felasco said. Felasco and other C-NS
players in the district will have to play their winter seasons before the Fall Sports Season 2.
The volleyball team has taken no time off and has still been going full force whenever
they get a chance. The team has been playing beach volleyball at Sharkey's over in Liverpool all
summer which has helped the C-NS squad keep their team chemistry going.
"We're actually having one day a week volleyball open gym so that will keep us in the
swing of things," Felasco said.
Lucia and the C-NS Volleyball Program are starting their fitness testing this week with
the players wearing their masks while they condition. The C-NS volleyball team has a history of
training everyday while still working on their volleyball skills. They want to be the best
conditioned team in the state. Lucia's squads have won the past five Sectional Championships
dating back to 2015. Coaches in the area and across the state are still unsure if there will be any
type of state tournament.
"We all just really hope to get in one home match to send the seniors out the right way,"
Lucia said.
As Felasco and Lucia try to keep their dominance going, C-NS football wide-receiver star
Matt Klamm looks to keep their sectional championship dominance rolling as well.
"We were actually practicing on Tuesdays and Thursdays as if we were going to play
Sept. 21, and the day before the State announced the cancellation we had a meeting with Coach
Kline to be prepared for the postponement," Klamm said.  Although Klamm and the football team were upset with the cancellation they knew it was
the right decision to keep them healthy.
The football team will not take the offseason easy. Kline has set his team up to play in a
seven-on-seven non-contact league every Friday night to prepare them for the March 1 start date.
"That will be fun and it will be a good feeling to play under the lights again," Klamm said.
With the postponement of the football season it gave one of Kline's players the
opportunity to play another sport during this time. J. J. Razmazki, quarterback of C-NS, has been
playing golf for the school this fall under Coach Chuck Banks.
The C-NS-Blue golf team is one of a few C-NS Sports teams to hit the outdoors this fall.
The team has an impressive 6-1 record and sits in first place in the tightly packed powerhouse
Metro Division in the Salt City Athletic Conference.
"We won a Sectional Championship last year as a team and the goal is the same thing,
along with as many of us going to the State Championship," senior leader Ausin Alberici said.
Cicero-North Syracuse sports teams look to stay healthy, stay prepared, and take home as
many championships as possible this year.
