Rome Free Academy boys basketball earns win over C-NS in season-opener

Led by Damien Call, Rome Free Academy spoiled Cicero-North Syracuse's home-opener with an 82-74 win on Thursday. The Black Knights (1-0) trailed by 11 points at the start of the fourth quarter, but scored 35 points in the period to clinch the victory. The pivotal moment occurred when Call found senior guard Jordan Baldwin in the left corner for a three-pointer to cut the Northstars' lead to two. "That's a shot we got all game, and we weren't making them, so it was nice to see him put the ball in the basket," RFA coach Nick Medicis said of Baldwin's clutch shot. Immediately following that play, RFA junior guard Alex Wells stole the in-bounds pass and dished the ball to junior guard Hunter Frisch for the go-ahead layup. Call, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, scored 26 points on the night. From the moment he scored his first basket, it was apparent that he was looking to be aggressive. Four dribbles down the court was all it took for Call to find himself in the air for a two-handed dunk, which resulted in a roar of applause from the RFA fans that made the trip to Cicero. "I saw the open lane, so I just went in and dunked it. That was a good way to start off my senior season," said Call, who earned all-league first team honors as a junior last season. When Call found himself double-teamed, he often made the right pass to his teammates for a score. Senior forward Andrew Recco added 18 points, while Baldwin finished with 15. "(Damien's) gonna get his no matter what, but we need our other guys to step up because every one's coming to Damien and he's such an unselfish player that he's going to find the open guy," said Black Knights coach Nick Medicis. The Northstars were led by junior guards Brian Bonin and Grant Sennet. Bonin scored a game-high 28 points, to go along with eight rebounds and three assists, while Sennett scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Rome Free Academy's next test is against Henninger in the 16th Peppino's Invitational at Onondaga Community College on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. C-NS (0-1) will participate in the tournament as well, with a match-up against Liverpool on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
