Cicero-North Syracuse softball explodes for 14-run inning on Senior Night

The Cicero-North Syracuse softball team celebrated its eight seniors on Thursday.  The Senior Night celebration honored Mia Farone, Marisa Leone, Kierstyn McGraw, Kiyara Bembry, Sydney Rockwell, Gabrielle Jaquin, Erica Hibbard and Shelby Kippen and their efforts for the program.All eight seniors are in C-NS's starting lineup, and each of them was part of a 14-run fourth inning that propelled the Northstars to a 22-1 victory over Central Square."It was a great win," C-NS coach Morgan Nandin said. "These eight seniors have been a part of this program and on this varsity team for a long time. It was really fun and exciting to celebrate all eight of them. They obviously played really well, which was the icing on the cake." Nandin, who noted that she's coached each senior since 2022, expressed how "extremely talented" they are.  "A lot of them were even brought up as eighth graders on varsity," Nandin added. "They've helped create such a great culture and environment within the softball program. We really stress a strong core value, and these girls off the field are really great human beings. Everyone's comfortable, and everyone has each other's back on the team. We have so much confidence in anyone getting it done that day. Our seniors just do a good job of leading in their own unique way."  In Thursday's contest, C-NS had an 8-1 advantage following an eight-run first inning. The game lasted just five innings, thanks to a dominant 14-run fourth.  The inning was highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Rockwell and Farone.  Nandin said Thursday's win was a big turnaround following a tough 14-2 loss to Fayetteville-Manlius on Monday.   "We went back to work," Nandin added. "We made some adjustments in our approach to at-bats and you could see those adjustments in today's game. Our girls were much more relaxed in the box and they were very confident. Everyone was hitting the ball hard. We tried to reduce the amount of fly outs and just hit hard line drives, hard ground balls and put the ball in play."   The Northstars (10-4), winners of eight of their last nine games, face Rome Free Academy on Friday at 5 p.m.   C-NS has a handful of games left before the Section III Class AAA tournament gets underway in a couple of weeks.  "I'm excited," Nandin said. "We just want to get better every day and see what we need to improve on. We'll continue to refine things as we head into the playoffs, that way we're playing our best ball toward the end of the season. That's the hope."
