C-NS High School hosts inclusive basketball game

Players of all abilities at C-NS High School joined together for one big basketball game.

This game was not as traditional as most; players with and without disabilities were paired up to make one great team. Eric Smith, one of the coaches for the unified game, says, "It's kind of a joint venture between the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics to come up with an opportunity for kids with intellectual disabilities, and kids without disabilities to participate together in a scholastic sport."

And before tip-off, each player is recognized enthusiastically by calling out their name, jersey number, and a fun nickname, giving them the hype they truly deserve. Camryn Virginia, a Junior basketball player at C-NS, says, " I think it's good to show that the athletes have such a big support team."

During the game's halftime, everyone in the gym, students, teachers, players, coaches, etc., all joined on the court for one big dance party, reminding the students that this day is all about having fun.

Organizers say the main thing to make clear is that every basket, every pass, and every dribble comes with a whole lot of cheer.  "It's a great time, a fun time to see kids who normally don't get these opportunities to play and participate and see the love that they have not only for basketball but for each other….."We all can learn lessons from seeing how they cheer for each other, both these will cheer for one another," says Smith.

Sophia Abruzzese, a senior who was paired up for the game, says, "We're so supportive of being with our friends. It's not about winning. It's about being with our friends….. we love you guys, stay supportive and stay positive!"  Camryn mentions that this game brings the meaning of team to a whole other level." Whenever we see each other in the hall, we all make sure to give each other hugs, and hype each other up for the game, and dance, and sing."
