Cicero-North Syracuse ‘dynamic duo’ lift team to Class A field hockey state Final Four

Cicero-North Syracuse senior Chrissy Wagner and junior Gabby Wameling were responsible for all of the scoring in Saturday's Class A regional matchup with Section IV champion Greene.

"I think the two of them collectively together are really starting to find their groove," C-NS coach Pat Kennedy said. "Chrissy earlier in the year was putting up some numbers. Now Gabby's starting to put up some numbers, but together they're just like a little dynamic duo."

The Northstars will now advance to the state Final Four after defeating Greene 2-0 on Saturday at Sydney High School. It will be their first trip this far in the state tournament since they won the whole thing in 2006, Kennedy said.

"So it's been a long time," Kennedy said. "The girls were joking all week that was the year a lot of them were born. It's been a long time, so it means a lot. These girls worked so hard for it."

The NorthStars came out firing with a goal by Wagner just three minutes into the first quarter. That goal was assisted by Wameling.

"Gabby and Chrissy, it's amazing the last couple of weeks how far the two of them have come together," Kennedy said. "I love having them both on my team without a doubt."

C-NS would hold on to that one-goal lead through the second and third quarters.

"(Our defense) came through huge for us," Kennedy said. "The four of them in back, plus our goalie, but the four defenders in back just played a heck of a game. The strongest thing they do is support one another. I couldn't be any more prouder of our defense right now. They had a heck of a game."

With about five minutes left in the third, Greene had back-to-back corners, but senior goalie Avery Richardson and the Northstars' defense held strong.

C-NS got its first corner opportunity late in the fourth quarter. Wagner, this time, found Wameling for the score with about two minutes to go in the game.

Cicero-North Syracuse only had two shots on goal and one corner, compared to Greene's eight shots and nine corners.

The Northstars reached Saturday's regional game after defeating Rome Free Academy 3-2 in the Class A sectional championship last Sunday.

The Northstars (14-2) will now advance to the state semifinals at 9:30 a.m. next Saturday at Centereach High School on Long Island. They will face the winner of the regional matchup with Section VI's Clarence.

"For us to move on to the Final Four and to head down to Long Island, the girls are beyond super excited," Kennedy said. "It should be a fun one."
