The Cicero-North Syracuse field hockey squad will look to grab its first-ever state title after a 3-1 win over Section VI's Clarence in the Class A semifinals on Saturday at Centereach High School.
"Our team played wonderfully today. It was an absolute team effort," C-NS coach Pat Kennedy said. "We played a complete game."
The Northstars (15-2) now move on to face Section XI's Northport in the Class A championship game at 10 a.m. Sunday at Centereach High School.
The last time C-NS made an appearance in the Class A championship game was in 2006, when they lost to eventual Section I's Lakeland. The last Section III Class A program to win a state title was Rome Free Academy in 1994.
"We're going to have our hands full, but hopefully have another team effort," Kennedy said.
Christina Wagner led C-NS with a hat trick, scoring one in the first half and two in the fourth period.
The Northstars led 2-0 with 13 minutes left in regulation. The Red Devils (18-1) cut it to 2-1 with a score by Elle Ridge.
Wagner, however, iced the win for the Northstars with her third goal of the game at 4:40 in the fourth.
"There's no way (Wagner) gets (a hat trick) without help from her teammates," Kennedy said.
Kennedy praised his teams' resiliency, determination and closeness with each other.
"This is a team of unselfish players," he said. "It's a team that loves being together and doing everything together. They love playing for each other too."
